Wy’east UU is a shared ministry. Our quarter-time minister, Rev. Leslie Becknell Marx, leads one service most months and also often contributes elements to one other service each month. Our lay-leadership collaborates to bring a variety of guest ministers, other speakers and special programs on the remaining Sundays. These include regular appearances by Guest Minister Rev. Stephani Skalak with her focus on Personal Spiritual Practice, as well as a series of speakers and special collections related to our Social Justice focus for the year “We are Stronger Together.”

In months when there are 5 Sundays, which happens 4 or 5 times each year, we will typically gather for a service project rather than a worship service.

Meet the Moment: Together Everywhere -- the GA Sunday Service, Rev. Jen Youngsun Ryu

Date

Each year, the end of June brings the largest annual gathering of Unitarian Universalists. The 2026 UUA General Assembly is all virtual and will be held on June 14th through the 21st. We will share elements from the culminating Sunday Worship from June 21st at this service a week after the event. The GA Sunday Worship was planned and led by the Rev. Jen Youngsun Ryu (she/her) who serves the Unitarian Universalist Church in Eugene.

Rev. Jen Youngsun Ryu arrived in Eugene in 2021 while the building was still closed and the congregation was finding its way back to one another. Born in Seoul and raised in Ohio, she found Unitarian Universalism as a young adult in Baltimore and was drawn to a faith that honors both the tough mind and the tender heart.

After years of lay leadership, she entered seminary in 2002, then spent nearly a decade in parish ministry with the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists, alongside service at the district level and on the UUMA Board. Her vocational path later led her into healthcare chaplaincy, where she specialized in oncology care and earned board certification. Working as a staff chaplain in Charleston deepened her pastoral skills and broadened her interest in spiritual care research.

In the wake of the pandemic, Rev. Ryu felt called back to the parish and to the rhythms of a multigenerational community. This year, she celebrates the 20th anniversary of her ordination with a steady conviction that our liberal faith, practiced with honesty and love, changes lives for the good.

Note: we elected to share this service a week after it was presented live because these services tend to be quite long (usually 1.5 hours or more) and wanted the opportunity to share the elements that would fit best in our more typical worship format.
